Then Sings My Soul
“Then sings my soul”
Do you like music? What kind? My favorite genre is contemporary Christian music from the likes of Chris Tomlin, Mark Schultz, TobyMac, and the Newsboys. I am quite eclectic within the genre but it is pretty much the only type of music I listen to consistently. I also enjoy classical, especially those that feature flute since I am a flautist, and some pop.
One thing that I have noticed for quite awhile now is that even when I’m not thinking about a song I find my inner self singing. I’ve mentioned this to a few close friends and they said that they have experienced the same thing. It isn’t the same as getting a song stuck in your head.
My belief is that is my soul worshiping the Heavenly Father. Here’s what the Bible has to say on this topic:
That my soul may sing praise to You and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks to You forever. Psalm 30:12 (NASB)
My lips will shout for joy when I sing praises to You; And my soul, which You have redeemed. Psalm 71:23 (NASB)
My soul longed and even yearned for the courts of the LORD; My heart and my flesh sing for joy to the living God. Psalm 84:2 (NASB)
My heart is steadfast, O God; I will sing and make music with all my soul. Psalm 108:1 (NIV)
One of my favorite hymns is “How Great Thou Art”:
Verse 1:
O Lord my God! When I in awesome wonder
Consider all the works Thy hand hath made.
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.Refrain:
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!Verse 2:
When through the woods and forest glades I wander
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur
And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze:
(Repeat Refrain.)Verse 3:
And when I think that God, His Son not sparing,
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;
That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin:
(Repeat Refrain.)Verse 4:
When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!
Then I shall bow in humble adoration,
And there proclaim, my God, how great Thou art!
(Repeat Refrain.)
How about you? Does your soul sing even when your tongue is silent? even when your heart is heavy and you don’t feel like singing?
