This is a hybrid site that has been around since the mid-90s! It began as static HTML back in those days and was built and managed in FrontPage. At first it was static tables, then I added a little class Active Server Pages connected to a Microsoft Access database. A few years ago we upgraded the ASP to ASP.NET and connected to a Microsoft SQL Server database. The editor wanted the ability to quickly add articles so we added a WordPress installation in a sub-directory. Both the ASP.NET and WordPress pages share the same look and feel but have their own custom templates. I began with the StudioPress News theme, customized it for our needs and then created a dynamic web template for the ASP.NET side. Overall, it is quite seamless going from one side to the other.
Besides creating/customizing the templates for both the ASP.NET and WordPress sites, I also create a newsletter template for the weekly updates and monthly newsletter sent through Aweber. The site also uses Facebook Comments and has social integration built in via Aweber.
One of the trickiest parts of this project is that it is on a Windows/IIS server rather than UNIX/Apache server. WordPress will work on a Windows server but troubleshooting problems can drive you crazy. At some point, we may convert all the ASP.NET code to PHP and move to the UNIX environment.
